DIY Gizzmo Tach Recall Shift Lamp

DIY Gizzmo Launch Control

Vehicle: 1997 S14a 200SX (Silvia Aus Spec)

This is the upgrade guide from the Gizzmo Dual Stage shiftlight to the Tach Recall Shiftlight and optional Launch Control Interface. Side by side the light units have the same profile and size.

Access the ECU to remove the previous shift lights wires. If this is a new install, you will be going here too. The ECU in the S14 is in the standard location behind the kick panel at the passengers feet.

Use the manual to determine which pairings of wires you will need from the Launch Controller.

Disconnect the battery from the system - as you will be soldering power wires and playing with the ECU.

Using a socket wrench, removing the plastic covering and plug from the ECU.

Remove the ECU plug from the ECU and examine. Use the pin layouts in the manual for your vehicle.

If you are replacing an existing Shift Light, undo the previous insulation and prepare to remove the previous soldering of wires.

Apply heat to the previous soldering to loosen the connection and remove - making note of where you had the previous wires makes installation of the new unit easier.

If this is a new installation - then identify the wires you will need and strip them back ready to be spliced. The Tach Recall intercepts wires - as does the launch controller - but dont cut wires until you are ready.

Thread the cabling for the shift light through the dash and out to the ecu side, likewise return the launch control switch from the ecu to the clutch pedal. This switch is magnet operated. Just put on side to a fixed part under the clutch pedal - and the magnet side of the switch to the pedal itself. When its within 21mm is engaged - when it outside of 26mm its disengaged. This switch is what activates the launch control and flat shifting.

I used the rubber brackets for the dual stage for the tach recall. Affixed with double sided velcro incase it needs to come off.

Return to the ECU and commence getting the wires out for splicing.

Keep the Launch Controller in the area at the moment - as you will need to splice it in also. It shares the same power and ground as the tach recall - so we will do them together.

Ok so here is the difference between the Dual stage and the Tach Recall. With the Tach Recall - you have to "intercept" the wire rather then just splice into it. So, cut the tach wire from the ecu - then intercept with 2 wires from the tach recall accordingly.

Continue with the power and ground wires also. Remember, if you are also installing the Launch Controller - you need to use these wires again for powering that unit.

The white control wires are joined. This is what links the launch control to the tach recall shift light.

Cut the igniter wires and intercept them with the launch control series of wires. There will be 2 for every igniter from the ECU.

Continue through all 4 sets of igniters. Some cars have more or less. The launch control supports up to 6 igniters. (6 cylinders)

Here it is all wired in and ready to go back into place. Plug the ecu plug back into the socket and using your socket wrench tight back up. This is not how we want it to end up, so clean up the mess, making sure no wires are kinked or pinched.

Plastic cover placed on ECU plug and launch control ready to be hidden.

The final step, everything is nice and neat and tucked away; ready for the kick panel to be replaced.
